Clean lines, elegant period details and a palette of soft paint shades – that’s what caught my eye when I first saw this lovely Victorian house. I had contacted the owner, artist Vanessa Bowman, after I found her work for sale online. I thought that if her wonderful paintings were anything to go by she might just have a beautiful home…
I was right, and luckily, when I got in touch she’d already completed the fraught renovation that was required to transform the house from the crumbling wreck that she and her husband had purchased years earlier, otherwise Vanessa might not have been so keen to have me and Rob, the photographer, over for a day.
Vanessa juggled the renovation work with raising a young family, all the while dreaming of how that ideal home in the country would allow her to follow her true calling: becoming a full-time painter.
I felt it important for our shoot that she hung some of her work around the house (on the chimney wall of both the master bedroom and the sitting room) so that people looking at our photos see how talented she is. Otherwise, she has a lovely collection of art by other artists, including some incredible portraits of the children (in the stairway) that were painted by Vanessa’s father, a professional portrait artist.
As for those paint shades, Vanessa has used Farrow & Ball’s Savage Ground in the snug, French Gray on the hall and stair panelling, and New White on the drawers in her daughter’s bedroom. In the master bedroom, meanwhile, she chose a paper by Sanderson (from the Marney range) for the chimney wall. For the shoot, I added Nadine bedding from Kingsley Home to provide a splash of colour and pattern, but other than that, everything is Vanessa’s own lovely, fresh taste.
Vanessa is offering readers of my blog a special discount on prints of her paintings: normally £65, they will be available for £45 during the month of November 2016. Contact Vanessa at vanessabowman.co.uk and mention my blog and get yourself a little early Christmas present!
